This 12 sided Dance Hall located in Bellville, Texas was designed and built by Joachim Hintz, a German immigrant Carpenter and it Opened in 1897 Austin County has several old classic Dance Halls but in my opinion this is the best of them.

This barnyard is at Yoakum, Texas, where my wife's sister and husband used to live. The bull was at a nearby ranch and came up to me and just stood there. With a fence between us for security I reached out and scratched his head, which he seemed to like!

This is my third used car lot painting and after selling out the prints of the other two I went a few years and really missed having a car lot picture to show. Finally the idea for this painting hit me and this is the result. The portrait of the Big Texan on the building is a portrait from memory of the man who sold me my first used car in 1959.

Available for purchase:

When I was a teenager in Austin, a friend of mine lived behind a Car Lot named Big Volume Simmons and they sold both New and Used Cars on both sides of Lamar Boulevard. Bubba was a salesman for Simmons, but he acted like he owned the place so I made his dream come true in this painting!

The Jefferson Theater, built in 1927, is in Downtown Beaumont, Texas and "Baby The Rain Must Fall" was filmed in Southeast Texas in 1964. I'm told that Country Singer George Jones ushered there, also that the World Premier's of "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Babe" were held there and that Steve McQueen lived in Beaumont for a short time. Any resemblance to Steve on the Motorcycle is purely intentional!

Christmas 1994. This concrete Birdbath is one we've had for several years and in fact made the move from Austin to the Ranch with us. It sits out in the yard in view from our Kitchen and Dining Room and has delighted us with the variety of birds and other animals it has attracted over the years. One day as we were eating lunch, I happened to glance up and see a cardinal on the birdbath, getting a drink, I thought that, there was a Painting, just waiting to be painted and this is the result. I am forever amazed at the simple things that we take for granted every day that can be an inspiration at any given moment and sincerely believe that if everyone would look for some little inspiration or thing to be thankful for each day, that we would all be happier and our burdens would be much easier to bear!

I've been wanting to do a painting with Redbud for years and finally got the idea I've been waiting for. Normally I paint a bright colored bird in a subdued scene and this time I reversed the process with these subtly colored Mourning Doves against the brightly colored Redbuds.

Available for purchase:

This is one of the many great views between Kerrville and Leakey, Texas and I believe that's the Frio River below! I added the Cardinal on the branch to give the scene some perspective.

Available for purchase:

These Spicebush Swallowtails (Papilio troilus) are checking out the Bluebonnets which had to be in record numbers in 2007. Spicebush Swalllowtails are normally more common in East Texas but we have some here on the Ranch that didn't read the Field Guides! Spicebush Swallowtails are avoided by Birds and other predators as a result of looking similar to the Poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail.

Available for purchase:

(Papilio polyxenes) The Black Swallowtail is found across the State. The Female shown here resembles the toxic Pipevine Swallowtail and is avoided by predators because of this resemblance. The Male Black Swallowtail has yellow instead of blue on the top side of it's wings.

Although I've flushed many a Covey of Quail in my wanderings through pastureland, I'm always totally startled when the sudden buzz of wings comes up from the ground and the Bobwhites go scattering in all directions!

These three calves were born this spring and one morning as I was feeding the herd I noticed that the way they were lined up it appeared that the colors of the white calf on the left and the reddish brown calf on the right were blending together to color the center calf!

(Eustoma grandiflorum, Gentian family) also called Purple Prairie Gentian, lira de San Pedro, Western Blue Gentian and Blue Marsh Lilly grows in moist areas all over Texas except mountains and pine forests from June to September. Seeds of these showy plants are commercially available and they are easy to cultivate and grow to about 30" high. Picking the flowers stops the plant from reproducing and has caused a decline in their natural occurrence.

Christmas 1989. Sumac is a curse to many ranchers in Texas because it overruns pastures and uses water needed for grass, yet it is a blessing to a host of wild animals and birds like these Eastern Bluebirds because it's leaves and berries are excellent food and it's blazing colors are a blessing to the eye as they ignite the fall landscape. Although all things in nature have a purpose each is a blessing to some and a curse to others. If we think about it, practically everything we do in life is that way depending on how we are perceived. May you be a blessing to others and see them in the same way!

Bluebonnets (Lupinis texinis, Legume Family) are the official state flower of Texas and grow only in Texas from March to May in all areas except far west Texas and the panhandle. The seeds of the Bluebonnet can lay dormant on the ground for almost 20 years, assuring the survival of the species. Indian Paintbrush (Castelleja indivisa, Figwort family) and called Scarlet Paintbrush or Texas Paintbrush, grows during the same time and in the same places as the Bluebonnet and is a semi-parasite, injecting its roots into the roots of other plants and taking nutrients.
